SUMMARY:Creating a Culture of Belonging Using Restorative Practices:  One District’s Journey - March 6\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Valley Stream CHSD embarked upon a districtwide approach to restorative practices in the 2023-2024 school year. The Creating a Culture of Belonging workshop will outline the steps employed to bring this critical work to the four district secondary schools. District Director of Restorative Programs\, Nakeshia Smith-Farnum\, and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction\, Dr. Jennifer DiMaio\, will provide context regarding the initiative\, detailing the steps involved\, potential pitfalls\, and successes of the plans. Additionally\, restorative school counselors Janna Brodman and Gina Brick will lead participants in community-building activities that emphasize the role of restorative practices in fostering a culture of belonging in our schools.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNakeshia Smith Farnum is the Director of Restorative Practices and Community Engagement for the Valley Stream Central High School District. Nakeshia is a certified specialist in restorative justice principles and culturally responsive practices. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nDr. Jennifer DiMaio is the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in the Valley Stream Central High School District. Dr. DiMaio began as an ESL and Spanish teacher\, eventually serving as Department Chairperson and then District Director of Instructional Services.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Zoom link and a text reminder will be sent to all registrants a few days before the workshop.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is free to all CAS administrators. DESCRIPTION:  \nCAS APRIL DELEGATE ASSEMBLY MEETING\nEach year\, the Council of Administrators and Supervisors (CAS) honors public school principals\, assistant principals\, supervisors\, directors\, and chairs in Nassau and Suffolk Counties for their diligence\, professionalism\, and dedication. Long Island is home to many of the finest schools in our state\, and CAS would like to acknowledge outstanding public school administrators who contribute to this excellence. \n  \nAs in the past\, CAS administrators will be nominated by their peers and selected by the CAS Award Committee for exemplifying the highest qualities of school administrative leadership\, achievement\, vision\, innovation\, and collaboration with parents\, students\, staff\, and fellow administrators within their school communities. \n  \nCAS members are encouraged to nominate a colleague by completing the CAS 2025 Administrator of the Year interactive Nomination Form. Even if you are not actively considering retirement and preparing for life post-retirement\, this could be an excellent opportunity to learn more about the New York State Teachers Retirement System\, Social Security\, and your tax-deferred benefit plans.
