SUMMARY:Financial Literacy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Each year at around this time\, CAS sponsors a Financial Literacy Program for our members contemplating retirement. Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic\, some members are actively thinking about retirement and planning for life post retirement. This year we will offer socially distanced in-person conferences for up to 12 members according to New York State and CDC guidelines.  Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided for all participants. \nIt is never too early to start thinking about retirement and actively planning for it. Whether you are thinking of retiring sooner or later down the road\, we have developed another essential workshop for our members as a part of our continuing CAS Financial Literacy Program that you may find extremely helpful. On behalf of CAS\, I would like to extend you an invitation to attend a workshop designed to inform\, educate\, and enhance your financial literacy as you prepare for the next phase of your life. \nRetirement – Will I be Ready and Able to Retire as Planned?\nWith Andrew Buttelman of Lincoln Investment and Special Guest Speaker\, David Daly** \nCAS Financial Workshop: 5:00 – 7:00 PM\nWednesday\, April 21\, 2021\nMelville Marriott\, Melville\, NY\n1350 Walt Whitman Road\n(Refreshments will be provided)\nShould this workshop fill up quickly\, we will schedule another one soon after. \nThe workshop will focus on: \nNavigating the New York State Teachers System \n\nGetting credit for prior service\nGetting credit for prior military service and the new rules\nUnderstanding your in-service death benefit and making sure your family is secure\nDisability and your pension\nUnderstanding your death benefit\nVerifying Salaries\nChoosing an Option\nFiling the application\nEarning after retirement\n\nTax-Deferred Investment Opportunities – What you need to know! \n\n403-b plans\nEmployer-sponsored 403-b and 457 plans\nElective and non-elective plans\nLimits\, options\, and catch up provisions\n\nSick days and Incentives \n\nWhat you must know about sick days\, incentives and understanding the Non-elective Employer-sponsored 403-b\n\n**David Daly was the manager of the Public Information Office of the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System. He was the System’s spokesperson and was responsible for its publications\, website\, and media information. Previously\, he was the Administrator of Pre-retirement Planning where he organized and implemented the System’s retirement planning seminar program\, which is a model for other systems throughout the country. Currently\, Dave is the Administrator of the National Pension Education Association and is a nationally known presenter on retirement planning issues and public employees’ programs. \nWe have received tremendous positive feedback from CAS members who have attended our previous Financial Literacy Workshops.
