Andrew Greene  – 2014 ESSAA/CAS Region 1 – Administrator of the Year

 Andrew Greene, Principal of Candlewood Middle School in the Half Hollow Hills School District in Dix Hills is the 2014 ESSAA/CAS Administrator of the Year. He was recognized at the statewide ESSAA Delegate Assembly held on May 30th in Syracuse for exemplifying the qualities of school administrative leadership including vision, innovation, and collaboration at the building, district, and regional levels.

Andy is widely respected across Long Island as an accomplished middle school leader who has created successful Professional Learning Communities at Candlewood and incorporated research-based best practices such as Understanding by Design and Classroom Instruction that Works. Andy is a noted presenter at local and national ASCD conferences, and a consultant with school districts developing “Understanding by Design” and the best practices in evaluation and supervision. He is also an adjunct professor in the Administrative Certification Program at Stony Brook University and has worked closely with Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe.

Andy has served as President of the Half Hollow Hills Administrators Association, Co-President of the Suffolk County Middle Level Principal Association, middle-level liaison with the New York State Education Department, and past president of the Long Island chapter of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (LIASCD). He has been at the forefront of advocacy and is the co-author of an open letter to parents developed by newyorkprincipals.org.  citing the dangers of the hasty implementation of unpiloted assessments and the APPR system. In addition, he co-chaired the CAS Suffolk APPR sub-committee to develop a workable Principal Evaluation model and provided feedback to Senator John Flanagan as a member of a CAS committee on necessary changes to improve the current testing and evaluation structure.
