On Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the Plainview Holiday Inn, presented a free two-hour professional development workshop for CAS members entitled “Security in Public Schools: 2018.”

Dr. Alan Groveman is currently Interim Superintendent of Garden City and formerly long-time Superintendent in the Connetquot School District. Also, Dr. Groveman has wide-ranging experience in the education field and work with local Fire/Rescue departments including the Huntington Township Tactical Rescue Team, the Suffolk County Urban Search and Rescue Team, the Suffolk County Police Department, and other investigative agencies.

The workshop focused on the knowledge school leaders need to carry out their primary responsibility – the safety and security of the staff and students in their care. The workshop addressed state guidelines, local board policies, school safety plans, and working with local law enforcement agencies. Participants explored current violence prevention strategies and discussed lessons learned from scenarios that have recently occurred in schools across the nation. Attendees left with new found knowledge of robust security practices and an understanding of the steps they need to take to enhance their safety plans to better address incidents that may arise in district.

CAS is a certified NYSED Continuing Teacher Leader Education (CTLE) sponsor, and all successful participants earned two (2) hours of CTLE professional development credit applicable toward the hours needed for continuing certification.
