On January 21, Dr. Shawn Robertson presented a CAS CTLE Workshop via Zoom for over forty CAS members seeking improved observational skills and credit toward continued administrative certification. Throughout this two-hour interactive workshop, Dr. Robertson helped the participants explore different models for engaging in digital check-ins. Presently, many of our schools are involved in all virtual or hybrid instruction models due to the COVID pandemic and because of this crisis, teacher observations have mostly gone by the wayside with remote instruction’s predominance.

Dr. Robertson led the group interactively exploring flexible frameworks used locally and in nearby states to monitor teachers’ instruction that provide feedback, build community, support teacher growth, and maintain a reasonable degree of accountability in the classroom. The workshop catalyzed the administrators in attendance to pursue more comprehensive strategies designed to better observe virtual instruction and focus on improving teaching and learning.

Dr. Shawn Robertson is an Associate Professor in the Child Study Department at St. Joseph’s College and a former secondary English teacher who has served as an Assistant Principal, Principal, and Chief Academic Officer. He holds a B.A. from SUNY Cortland, an M.S. in English Education from Queens College, an M.A. in Education from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from St. John’s University. He is a consistent presenter to local, national, and international audiences in pedagogy and technology integration. Author of several articles, he is a self-described tech-geek who has a passion for teaching educators how to successfully bridge the digital divide through leveraging technology in creative ways.
