With the ongoing challenges of the Covid pandemic and Omicron surge continuing, many Nassau and Suffolk County public school administrators are contemplating retirement. In response, CAS sponsored this very well attended zoom workshop “Will I be Ready and Able to Retire as Planned?”  focused on Financial Literacy and Retirement Planning. Andrew Buttelman, along with guest speaker David Daly provided CAS members present with valuable information about their New York State Teachers Retirement System (NYSTRS) pension benefits, long-term financial planning, and Social Security. David Daly is a well-respected expert on the NYS pension system who for many years was the New York Teachers Retirement system spokesperson and the Coordinator of Pre-Retirement Planning services.

Topics discussed included choosing a retirement option, understanding your in-service death benefit, prior service and out of state service, unused sick days, employer-sponsored non-elective and elective 403(B) plans, understanding all pension tiers, and member benefit calculations. The program ran from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with many members seeking additional conversations with Andrew and David.

CAS will continue to sponsor Financial Literacy workshops for our members focused on Retirement, College Planning, Social Security, and tax shelter programs commonly offered by school districts to administrative employees such as the Roth IRA, various 403(B) and 457 plans. Our next retirement planning workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 & Thursday, April 14, 2022.
