Over the past few months, many CAS members indicated a desire to find more information about retirement. Consequently, CAS scheduled several Zoom Retirement Planning Workshops in addition to the in-person retirement planning workshops held on April 21st and 22nd at the Melville Marriott Hotel. Also, members not enrolled in the New York State Teachers Retirement System (NYSTRS) requested a workshop specifically focused on the New York State Employees Retirement System (NYSERS). With this in mind, CAS presented one Zoom Retirement Planning Workshop concentrated on the Teachers Retirement System on Wednesday, May 26th. Another one focused on the Employees Retirement System on Monday, June 7th.

These CAS retirement planning workshops entitled “Will I be Ready and Able to Retire as Planned?” were presented by Andrew Buttelman and guest speaker David Daly. Our retirement planning support team provided CAS members with valuable information about pension benefits, long-term financial planning, and Social Security. David Daly was the New York Teachers Retirement system spokesperson and the Coordinator of Pre-Retirement Planning for many years and is a well-respected expert on the NYS pension system. Topics discussed included choosing a retirement option, understanding your in-service death benefit, prior service, unused sick days, employer-sponsored non-elective and elective 403(B) plans, understanding all pension tiers, and member benefit calculations.

CAS members unable to attend any of the workshops because of schedule conflicts are encouraged to call the CAS office to inquire about small group Zoom conferences or individual consultations. Members who would like copies of the information distributed during the workshops should contact Andrew Buttelman at the address below.

If you have any questions about the possibility of retiring soon, please do not hesitate to contact your CAS attorney. They would be the most knowledgeable resource with the best understanding of the retirement provisions of your unit’s collective bargaining agreement.
