The current COVID-19 pandemic, the looming budget cuts, possible district incentives, and the changing face of education for the 2020-2021 school year have many members wondering about the possibility of retirement.

Because our schools are closed and we are all working remotely, CAS presented an informative retirement planning webinar on May 7th for over 60 public school administrators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties contemplating their futures. The CAS retirement planning workshop entitled “Will I be Ready and Able to Retire as Planned?” was presented by Andrew Buttelman, along with guest speaker David Daly. Our retirement planning support team provided CAS members with valuable information about their New York State Teachers Retirement System (NYSTRS) pension benefits, long-term financial planning, and Social Security. David Daly was the New York Teachers Retirement system spokesperson and the Coordinator of Pre-Retirement Planning for many years and is a well-respected expert on the NYS pension system. Topics discussed included choosing a retirement option, understanding your in-service death benefit, prior service and out of state service, unused sick days, employer-sponsored non-elective and elective 403(B) plans, understanding all pension tiers, and member benefit calculations.

CAS will continue to inform members if the state or your school district offers a retirement incentive. Of course, if you have any questions about the possibility of retiring soon, please do not hesitate to contact your CAS attorney.

Members unable to attend this workshop who would like the information distributed should contact Andrew Buttelman.
