Business Manager

The Nassau Library System is seeking a Business Manager to oversee finance and human resources for a public library consortium of 54 member libraries. NLS employs 26 staff members and has annual revenues and expenditures of $10M+. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in budget development and monitoring, accounts payable and receivable, HR, state retirement and health insurance systems, and government purchasing contracts. NLS is dedicated to the continuous strengthening of the public libraries in Nassau County, NY and our team is passionate about serving them. Key Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develops, analyzes, and interprets accounting information in order to appraise operating results, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operational effectiveness of NLS
  • Assists the Director and Assistant Directors with the coordination and preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts
  • Furnishes monthly reports, revises and updates reports to be more useful and efficient, and furnishes external reports as necessary
  • Is responsible for providing effective financial controls for NLS and maintaining compliance with applicable law, NLS board policy, and the union contract
  • Oversees purchasing, payroll processing, banking relationships, insurance processing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable
  • Administers benefit programs such as disability, health insurance, pension system, flexible benefits, workers’ compensation, and unemployment
  • Assists member library personnel in resolving financial issues and consults on best practices
  • Procures goods and services cooperatively on behalf of member libraries to achieve economies of scale and actively seeks opportunities for new cooperative purchases

Key Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of senior-level financial operations experience, with thorough knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and applications
  • BA/BS degree in accounting, business administration, or related subject
  • Experience in a government or nonprofit setting, specifically with administering NYSHIP and NYSLRS benefits (including related software), strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency using QuickBooks
  • Handles confidential information responsibly and ethically

Job Requirements:

  • Some evening and weekend work may be required; Attendance at NLS Board Meetings required
  • Some travel may be required
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Required to use personal auto with mileage reimbursement

Starting Salary:

$95,000-$110,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits, including participation in the NY State pension system and health insurance program, and potential for limited telecommuting.
