Message from David Frank, the NYSED Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Education Policy

To Our School Communities,

As November 1 approaches, we know lapses in food benefit distribution nationwide may affect New York families in many ways.

At SED, we are proud of the work our schools already do to support students facing food insecurity. You know your communities best, and your continued efforts make a difference every day.

We want to share key resources and reminders to help you meet your community’s needs. Please share broadly:

What to Know and Do

Connect with local food banks.

·    Regional and community food banks remain active statewide. We encourage districts and BOCES to partner with local food banks to ensure students and families have access to nutritious options: Regional Food Bank Map (NYSDOH)

Anticipate increased demand for school meals.

·    The Universal Meal Program will continue providing breakfast and lunch at no cost. Some families may rely more heavily on school meals—work with your food service director to plan accordingly.

Share community food resources widely.

·    Use the attached tools from Healthier Generation to create a local food resource map and strengthen food security efforts.

·    Also helpful:

·    Provide both printed and digital versions for families.

Tap into SUNY volunteers.

·    The Empire State Service Corps connects SUNY students—trained to assist with SNAP applications and pantry work—with local schools. If you need volunteer support, complete the interest form.

Collaborate regionally.

·    Work with your BOCES and neighboring districts to identify shared needs and resources. Regional coordination strengthens local impact.

Build for the long term.

·    Consider school-based food pantries or similar models. See how Harpursville’s Hive Pantry operates as a sustainable, student-driven model.

We are grateful for the compassion and leadership across New York’s schools. No child should go hungry. SED will continue working with Governor Hochul, BOCES, and our state partners to support your efforts and ensure families get the help they need.
