This information is valuable for public school administrators as they carry out their daily responsibilities. Below is the latest update from NYSED, which includes essential “Must Know” information on various key state and federal policies and programs that impact our members across the state.

REMINDER

Talent Pool Submissions Open (Letter & Recommendation Form)

·     The New York State Education Department is requesting recommendations from teachers and/or principals in elementary through high school (K-12) to consider membership on advisory boards, task forces, and special recognition programs.

·     Your recommendations will identify educators who will be of great value to your community and New York State and who may also ultimately receive prestigious recognition for their contributions and achievements.

·     The nominee must be a principal or currently teaching at the K-12 level in a New York State public, private, parochial, charter school, or Department of Defense, and be appropriately credentialed in New York State. Attached please find the recommendation form for submission.

·     The deadline for submission is May 5, 2025.

·     Completed submissions and any questions may be emailed to talentpoolhe@nysed.gov.

Sample Clusters for the New Regents Examination in Chemistry and Regents Examination in Physics measuring the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards

·     The Office of State Assessment has posted sample clusters for the new Regents Examinations in Chemistry and Regents Examinations in Physics measuring the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards (NYSP12SLS).

·     Rating guides and performance expectation alignments for each question are also available.

·      These new Science Regents Examinations will measure the three dimensions of the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards and will first be administered in June 2026 (see the memo for more information on exam timelines).

Frequently Asked Questions for the High School Science Investigations

·     A document with responses to frequently asked questions related to the Investigations for the Regents Examinations in Science is now posted on the Office of State Assessment High School Science website.

·     The Investigations are hands-on, 3-dimensional learning tasks aligned to the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards (NYSP12SLS) that can be embedded into the curriculum.

·     Successful completion of the Investigations for the course will be required for admission to the respective Regents Examination; the definition of successful completion is left to local discretion.

Register for the Inclusion in PreK: Why it Matters Webinar

·     The Office of Early Learning is hosting the Inclusion in PreK: Why it Matters webinar on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

·     Participants will learn why creating inclusive PreK classrooms benefits all children, explore best practices, and gain practical strategies for fostering a welcoming and supportive learning environment.

Statewide Numeracy Conference on May 13, 2025 (attachment)

·     The New York State Education Department (NYSED), in collaboration with Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), the Big 5 school districts, and the small city school districts, will be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM at designated BOCES, Big 5, and small city school district sites.

·     This event, which will be a hybrid webinar with in-person discussion and presentations, will provide New York State administrators and numeracy leaders with an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of evidence-based practices for the teaching of mathematics in PreK-12 education.

·     Individuals must attend in person and register through their local BOCES, Big 5, or small city school district site.

·     The keynote speaker, and creator of the briefs, will be Dr. Deborah Loewenberg Ball. Dr. Ball is the William H. Payne Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan and the Director of TeachingWorks.

·     NYSED and Dr. Ball will release a new series of numeracy briefs that are grounded in research, are written for practitioners, and will provide scientific and useful information to support responsible teaching of mathematics across grades PreK-12.

·     The agenda will include an overview of the eight briefs, with time to reflect and discuss with colleagues and the NYSED team.

New York State Master’s in Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship

·     Applications are now open for the 2025-2026 Master’s in Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship supporting future New York State public school teachers. This scholarship provides tuition assistance for full-time master’s students at SUNY or CUNY who are pursuing teacher certification. Recipients must commit to living in New York and teaching in a public school for five years.

·     To receive the scholarship, applicants must:

·     Be a New York State resident enrolled full-time in a participating education master’s program.

·     Have earned an undergraduate degree in New York with a minimum 3.5 GPA.

·     Meet citizenship/residency requirements or apply through the NYS DREAM Act.

·     The application deadline is May 16, 2025.
